Competition and coordination in the global banking sector

This panel of the IBS aims to discuss the dual challenge - for global banks, supervisors, and supranational authorities - of tackling competition in a deglobalized world, and coordination of efforts to ensure global financial stability. Banks are not only competing between themselves but also with non bank financial institutions. Yet, ensuring competition under coordinated global policy standards is not the only struggle faced by the banking sector. Given its importance in the current global agenda, the panellists will also assess the role of the banking system in delivering a significant part of the pressing financing needs for the green and digital transitions while ensuring financial stability at global and regional level. Lastly, the recent events of Silicon Valley Bank and Credit Suisse will also give an opportunity to reflect on lessons learnt for the key players of the global financial system, namely the need to join forces for stability purposes.

The Climate imperative: Addressing the global climate change and transition needs

This panel will explore what role banks play in addressing the global climate change and sustainable transition needs in the context of the current energy transition, deglobalization, fragmentation, protectionism and macroeconomic situation. The panelists will focus on the following questions:

  • How are banks incorporating climate change considerations in their business strategies and risk management? What are key challenges in the current context and what is needed to facilitate progress in the short, medium and long term?
  • How can reporting standards help deliver on sustainability commitments and facilitate risk management? How to ensure that the sustainability reporting rules across jurisdictions work well together to empower investors and incentivize an accelerated pace of transition?
  • What role does transition finance play in climate risk mitigation and how can it be reflected in the risk management and supervisory approaches? What is the risk of regulatory arbitrage in the absence of harmonized regulatory response around the globe to climate risks?

Digital finance

A major strategic topic for banks globally is their future in the digital economy. Sweeping changes are shaping the digital finance landscape, including in customer behavior and expectations, new technologies, increasing competition with non-banks, and external dependencies from all types of critical providers. The impact of digital innovations such as Central Bank Digital Currencies, crypto assets and tokenisation, data sharing and open finance, cloud computing and AI on banks and banking is still largely unknown. Moreover, as digitalization introduces new market actors in financial services, the role that these challengers, especially Bigtechs, play in the new financial ecosystem, both as providers of financial services but also as providers of critical technology for banks’ digital innovation calls for a deep rethinking around regulation and supervision. At the same time, cyber-security and resilience, the cornerstone of digital innovation, becomes more complicated in a geopolitically volatile and deglobalizing environment.

This session will bring together a unique C-level perspective on the challenges and opportunities of digitalization of finance.  The panel will explore what is the road agead for banks, and discuss how they can leverage digitalisation to innovate, create new business opportunities and better service their customers to stay competitive in the digital world, while mitigating risks.
